Aflatoxin, What is it and why so many recalls?

Three aflatoxin recalls in about a week – this is becoming very interesting.

Aflatoxins in Corn, read this report.

  • Advanced Animal Nutrition recalled several lots of its dry Dog Power Dog Food due to aflatoxin levels above the acceptable limit.
  • In another recall of dry dog food for elevated levels of aflatoxin, Cargill Animal Nutrition on Wednesday said it was pulling two regional brands
  • A couple of weeks ago it was a ‘product pull’ of several varieties of Iams Pet Foods due to “elevated aflatoxin levels“.  This time it is an official recall “due to aflatoxin levels that were detected above the acceptable limit.”  Product recalled Iams ProActive Health Smart Puppy Food.

The problem with all these recalls is that it is so difficult to reach the consumer as they are sold over the counter. Nobody knows who purchased them or if they are even aware of the danger to their pets. Another of the reasons i use and recommend Life’s Abundance food.  It is purchased directly from them and shipped to your door. The food is made in small quantities and from each Batch two bags are kept on the shelf for quality control. If there were ever a problem, and there never has been a problem, the company can reach you directly to let you know.

Do some research on them. Visit this site. Learn about the ingredients, the integrity of the company and the product formulator and do  a comparison against your current food.

Canie Cuisine in a Can

Our holistic veterinarian has created not one, but two masterpieces of canine nutrition! We now offer premium canned dog foods formulated especially for breakfast and dinner. Your dog will flip for Turkey & Shrimp Breakfast in Broth, a savory omelet-inspired serving of turkey, shrimp, eggs, red skinned potatoes, red bell peppers and cheddar cheese. And at the end of the day, they’ll relish the delectable Chicken & Crab Dinner in Sauce, featuring organic chicken, crab, eggs, carrots, red skinned potatoes, peas and apples in an appetizing sauce.

Dr. Jane recommends feeding our canine companions twice a day. Egg Waste Pet Food Ingredients

Egg Waste Pet Food Ingredients

  • Written By: Susan Thixton

  • Categorized in: Pet Food Ingredients

From StratfordBeaconHerald.com “A $405,000 grant through the province’s Rural Economic Development (RED) program is helping revitalize an egg-processing plant here that is converting egg “waste” into high-protein pet food products.”

“The plant had been closed for about four years. Walz explained that the company processes whole-egg waste from egg-grading plants and turns it into powdered pet food, which has up to 50% protein.”

“In addition, the plant extracts egg white from discarded egg shells and produces liquid egg white that can be used as a binding agent in pet food.”

Note that the above company uses “whole-egg waste from egg-grading plants” – in other words, eggs rejected for use as human food – and turns it into powdered pet food ingredients.  Waste, eggs rejected for human use, become pet food.

A Google search of “what is whole-egg waste from egg-grading plants” finds the following as the first result…
“Egg liquids salvaged from non-edible eggs of egg grading plants were acidified to pH 4.0–4.5 with 3.4 N HCl and successfully stored at 13° C. for up to 10 days. After storage the acidified egg liquids were treated with 92% equivalency of 3.4 N NaOH after which egg meats were cooked and incorporated into a specialty pet food formulation.”  (From Poultry Science Association)

Egg liquids were (and we have to assume are still) treated with NaOH…which is “Sodium Hydroxide, which is also commonly referred to as Caustic Soda, Caustic or Lye.”  Yes…Lye…as in soap.

Wouldn’t lye (or sodium hydroxide) be dangerous for pets to consume?  Yes it is.

The Material Safety Data Sheet for Sodium Hydroxide states “Danger! Corrosive.  Harmful if swallowed or inhaled.  Causes burns to any area of contact.  Reacts with water, acids and other materials.”

Potential Health Effects
“Ingestion:  Corrosive!  Swallowing may cause severe burns of mouth, throat, and stomach.  Severe scarring of tissue and death may result.  Symptoms may include bleeding, vomiting, diarrhea, fall in blood pressure.  Damage may appear days after exposure.”

The pet food ingredient that could be made from waste eggs would be listed as “egg product” on the pet food label.  If your choice of pet food contains this ingredient, call the manufacturer and ask if the eggs are sourced from “whole-egg waste from egg-grading plants” or if the egg product is sourced from USDA approved eggs.  If the manufacturer representative doesn’t know or won’t tell you, you might want to consider a new pet food.

It continues to baffle me as to why regulatory authorities continue to allow the pet food industry to be the dumping ground for all things waste.  Regardless of federal law, regardless of the potential hazard to the pet consuming these waste ingredients…pet food continues to be THE place to sell your garbage.

Study found Dog Foods were Not what they Claimed- Susan Thixton

# Written By: Susan Thixton The Truth About Pet Food

We have another study proving pet foods are often not what their labels claim they are. This time, alternative meat protein dog foods (venison) were tested. They found 75% included ingredients not listed on the label.

In the Journal of Animal Physiology and Animal Nutrition, first published late last year, authors D. M. Raditic, R. L. Remillard, and K. C. Tater provides “ELISA testing for common food antigens in four dry dog foods used in dietary elimination trials.” This study took a close look at four venison kibble dog foods for common food allergens (a venison dog food would be commonly recommended as an alternative diet for dogs suffering from food allergies). They found that three of the four dog foods tested – that did NOT have soy listed on the ingredient panel – tested positive for soy. One of the four venison dog foods tested positive for beef, yet no beef ingredient was listed on the ingredient panel.

Many times, veterinarians recommend an alternative meat protein diet such as venison to patients suffering from food allergies. In an attempt to diagnose the specific allergen, veterinarians often prescribe the pet to be put on a dietary elimination trial; eliminating specific allergic suspects such as chicken, beef, corn, wheat, and soy from the pets diet. “General practitioners, gastroenterologists and dermatologists use dietary elimination trials to diagnose food allergies in dogs. These trials are lengthy (4–13 weeks) and require a client’s strict adherence to the prescribed food.”

“The pet owner may select OTC diets based on the name of the product, e.g. venison and sweet potato, which ensures nothing more than the product will contain at least 3% of those ingredients. Pet owners and veterinarians also make the assumption that if food proteins or isolates of a food protein are not named in the product ingredient list, then the product does not contain those food proteins and therefore, is a suitable diet to be used in a diagnostic elimination trial.”

But what this study found, was that pet parents purchasing some venison dog foods are not getting what they paid for. “Three of the four over the counter (OTC) venison canine dry foods with no soy products named in the ingredient list were ELISA positive for soy; additionally one OTC diet tested positive for beef protein with no beef products listed as an ingredient list. One OTC venison diet was not found to be positive for soy, poultry or beef proteins.”

When you read the full text of this study, it does allude to be in support of prescription pet foods. However, these scientists did not include brands of prescription pet foods in their study. To read the full study, click here.

Thanks to FreshFetch pet foods for sharing this study with us.

Why Customers Buy Life’s Abundance Pet Food

Life’s Abundance Dog Food Testimonials:

Dear Dr. Jane Bicks and company,
I just wanted to tell you of the transformation of my dog. We decided to switch after being convinced by my brother who had recently adopted a boxer and wanted the best food for his puppy. So, we decided to order a med size bag (of Life’s Abundance Premium Health Food for Puppies & Adult Dogs) and see how it went. He definitely liked the food and even in the transition there wasn’t any diarrhea or any potty problems. After about a week, you could see a difference in his coat. What was once dull and lack luster, had a sheen and a softness that just made you want to pet!! Then the pads of his feet began to change…softer, almost as if someone had put lotion on them! The shedding stopped! So did the itching!! Thank you all for all of your hard work and efforts to make a dog food that is healthy for peoples’ animals. I joke that my dogs probably eat better than I do!! Maybe you could get into health foods for people too!

I have never seem them look and feel so good! Their energy levels, coats, and overall health are great. They look and act younger now than they did years ago. The food and supplements are fantastic. Just wanted to let you know that!

Hello, I just wanted to comment on your dog food (Life’s Abundance Premium Health Food for Puppies & Adult Dogs)! Years ago, my sister was a distributor of this food, well she had to quit. I had forgotten about your products until I was researching for a better and safer product for my little “girls” (Boston Terrier’s) because of the awful poisoning of the dog foods…so I came across your website, once again. I have to say, I am sooo excited from seeing and being a witness to what ever ingredients you have in there, it has made my oldest BT act like a pup again. She has always been “lathargic, lazy, kick-back, passive” until I started feeding her your dog food! We could see the difference in as little as 2 days! I was totally impressed! I was sooo impressed with the results, I turned one of my friends on to it, so now she is buying it for her BT…her terrier absolutely loves it too! So anyways, THANK YOU for sacrificing many long hours into making this a HEALTHY food for our little girls! I pray that God continues to bless your business with success!

Warmly,

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I just ordered my second bag of Life’s Abundance (Premium Health Food for Puppies & Adult Dogs) and feel such a great relief from worrying about what food is the best for my beautiful labs. The recall scared me to death and because of it I researched all dog food to find the best. Life’s Abundance is the best, my dogs look better and feel better. My five year old is running around like he is two again. And his eyes are not running anymore and he isn’t rubbing his face and the rug anymore. He would itch so much he rubbed his face till it bled. But not anymore. I have great confidence in the food I feed them now, and they are so much happier and healthier. Thank you so very much for your great product and for caring about our pets and my peace of mind.

Sincerely,
Cheryl P., New York

Do You Know What Is In Your Pet’s Food – LOOK BEYOND THE FIRST FIVE INGREDIENTS!

Do you really know what’s in your dog’s food?

Do you feed Olijen, Wellness, Chicken Soup, Flint River, Nutra, Hills, Natural Balance and many more you can compare.

Compare your dog or cat food here.

Your dog eats the same food every day. The brand you feed is your dog’s main source of nutrition and vital to a long and healthy life. As a caring pet parent, it is important to see through clever marketing ploys when choosing a food worthy of your best friend.

Although you may think all pet food manufacturers have your pet’s best interests in mind, this is not always the case. Some manufacturers use ingredients that you would never knowingly feed your dog. In fact, you may be shocked to learn what some brands of dog food really contain.

Life’s Abundance Premium Health Food is veterinarian-formulated with safe and wholesome ingredients, including a blend of vitamins and minerals, high-quality proteins, whole grains, an antioxidant system, nutritious vegetables and fruits, omega fatty acids, calcium and phosophorus for healthy teeth and strong bones and dietary fiber to help maintain a healthy digestive tract. Every Life’s Abundance purchase helps to support the important work of this extraordinary foundation, devoted to helping these animals find homes and lead happier lives. It’s just one more reason to feel good about purchasing Life’s Abundance products.

BEYOND THE FIRST FIVE INGREDIENTS!

While the first five ingredients play a significant role in the nutritional make-up of your dog’s food, every single ingredient is important. For nearly a decade, tens of thousands of dogs and cats have been eating and thriving on Life’s Abundance foods. We attribute this success to our painstaking attention to the detail. Each and every ingredient in Life’s Abundance food is carefully chosen to work with the other to supply your companion animal with a highly nutritious and perfectly balanced meal every day, every year over a lifetime.

HIGH-QUALITY PROTEINS – Proteins are the building blocks of all living organisms. Protein is essential for all bodily functions including those of the brain, heart, skin, skeleton and many others. Life’s Abundance contains at least 26% of high-quality protein. Look for identifiable animal proteins such as “chicken meal” rather generic terms like “poultry meal,” which can consist of any fowl (turkey, chicken, geese, etc.).

CHICKEN MEAL VS. CHICKEN? Some foods contain chicken meat or chicken parts, which naturally hold a fair amount of water. We prefer to use chicken meal because most of the water has been removed, which makes it a concentrated source of protein. This means that there is a greater “protein content” in one pound of chicken meal versus one pound of chicken meat. That’s why high-quality chicken meal is a key ingredient in Life’s Abundance foods.

WHOLE GRAINS – Whole grains are an excellent source of protein, fiber, B vitamins, iron, zinc and other essential minerals. They also provide the kind of carbohydrates that deliver sustained energy to your dog. We include the natural goodness of Ground Brown Rice and Oat Groats in Life’s Abundance Dog Food.

VITAMINS AND MINERALS – The proprietary blend of vitamins and minerals in Life’s Abundance foods was carefully selected to work in concert with all of the other ingredients to enhance the overall nutritional value of the food.

ANTIOXIDANT SYSTEM – Among other nutrients, our antioxidant system includes vitamins A, C and E plus vegetables and fruits. The colorful skin and flesh of different vegetables and fruits contain phytonutrients, essential vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fiber. Each vegetable and fruit was carefully selected for its unique nutritional properties.

CHICKEN FAT – We believe the primary fat source in dog food should be animal-based because these fats contain a profile of fatty acids that are easily metabolized and generally more available to the body. Animal fats can vary in quality, so look for a species-specific fat like “chicken fat” (versus “animal fat”) to be certain of the kind of fat your dog is eating.

OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS – Omega-3 fatty acids are some of the most extensively researched natural nutritional ingredients in the world. Among its many health benefits, the omega-3’s in Life’s Abundance help support healthy skin and a shiny coat. We also included flaxseed meal for its outstanding nutritional profile and its contribution to healthy skin and coat.

DIETARY FIBER – Fiber is required in every diet to maintain healthy intestinal tract and good nutrient absorption. We use beet pulp, which is the fiber from the gray sugar beet (sugar removed). Many studies have demonstrated that beet pulp performs better than many other types of fiber.

DIRECT-FED MICROBIALS – These ingredients are similar to those found in supermarket yogurts. Direct fed microbials help support healthy immune and digestive systems. (Back to Comparison Chart)
