Palm Beach County DogSmithRachel Williams, CDT, CGC Evaluator
Having grown up on a small sheep and cattle farm in rural Wales it seems Rachel was destined for a life surrounded by animals. "The dogs on the farm always had a job to do" says Rachel, "Training them to herd sheep was as natural to them as it was to my family and me." This was her first experience training animals and as a child she would make up agility courses using bales of hay, poles and ladders for the dogs and her to practice on. That is, whenever they weren't working the sheep! Coming to the states as a nanny Rachel was not only involved with the "training" of the children in her charge, but just as importantly to the family, she became the primary trainer of the "four-legged furry kids" as well. It was during this time that she realized that dogs, much like children, learn best with repeated, consistent, patient and positive reinforcement. Her success and interest with progressive training methods motivated her to take private and group dog training classes and attend numerous professional dog training events to expand her new found skills leading to a new career path. Now in Florida, Rachel and Cornelius began searching for the "perfect Labrador" resulting in their pride and joy, Chloe, an English Sporting Labrador Retriever. In addition to their business and careers, Rachel, Cornelius and Chloe are all very active members of the Treasure Coast Retrievers Club. Chloe passed her CGC exam and is now an AKC, Master Hunter. Rachel is also a CGC Evaluator Susan Barton, CDT
An avid animal lover, Susan grew up on a “gentleman's farm” full of turtles, hamsters, rabbits, chickens, horses and of course dogs and cats. As an adult, Susan has trained her own dogs, Brodo, a Collie Shepherd mix and Bobo, a Border Collie, Shepherd, Corgi mix. Susan rescued both from her local shelter and they immediately became beloved family members and reliable hiking companions, one of Susan’s favorite pastimes. It was this love of dogs and dog training that led Susan to The DogSmith. "Training dogs comes naturally to me,” Susan says. “I tell friends and family ‘leave your dog with me and I will be happy to train it for you.’ Since I enjoy training dogs so much I decided to take my passion to the next level and become a DogSmith. I have great respect for their philosophies and vision and want to be a part of their mission of working closely with shelters and helping people who adopt animals keep their pets." Susan has also found that her dog training skills come in handy in other areas of her life. For the past four years, Susan has been in charge of taking Christmas portraits of Santa. She uses her knowledge of dog behavior to not only get the family puppy to cooperate for Santa but she has found the same techniques work well with the children waiting to sit on Santa’s lap.
